Click here for a PDF overview and map In the expansive gardens, every turn in a pathway presents new vistas, new fountains, new statues, trellised arbors, and trees trained and pruned into unusual shapes. The groves are where the fanciful element enters. Originally numbering fourteen, today's nine groves are chambers of greenery nestling in the small woods separating the pathways (hence the name of grove). When walking along a path, the existence of these marvels remains totally unsuspected.
Notre Dame & Latin Quarter, you will start with a guided walking tour of the Notre Dame area & Latin Quarter including Notre Dame, Sainte-Chapelle, The Archeology Dig and the Jewish Monument. The Notre Dame tower is included on your pass and as the line is long, Rob will tell you the best time to climb the 402 step spiral staircases. The construction of this Gothic cathedral, undertaken at the initiative of Maurice de Sully, began about 1160. The major work was completed by the 12th century. Changes were made the following century, according to the architectural canons of the radiating Gothic style then in fashion. About 1250, Jean de Chelles built the north arm and began work on the south arm, which was completed by Jean de Montreuil. From the middle of the 13th century to the beginning of the 14th century, chapels were constructed between the buttresses of the nave.
Sainte-Chapelle was built during the second half of 13th Century by Louis IX, the future Saint Louis, to house the relics of the Passion of Christ. Adorned with a unique collection of fifteen glass panels and a large rose window forming a veritable wall of light, Sainte-Chapelle is a gem of French gothic architecture.
Louvre Museum day starts with a walk in the Tuileries Gardens adjacent to the Louvre Museum. Rob will show you the area where gays have been cruising for centuries! It started as a redevelopment scheme of the Montparnasse and Maine railway stations in 1958 and had strong support from the new government. The tower itself was built between 1969 and 1973. According to the initial plans, the tower would have a maximum height of 154 meters. But even after this was approved by a commission, the developers increased the height to more than 200 meters.
Then you will visit the d'Orsay Museum opened in 1986 in a beautiful building which served as a train station until 1960's. The museum is devoted to the period dating from 1848 to 1914 providing a bridge between the classical Louvre and the modern Centre Pompidou. The main attraction of the museum is the Impressionists with numerous paintings by Renoir, Monet, (which is considered a class of its own), Pissarro, Sisley.
